IN the late fifties, early sixties, Mike left for the future and stayed there, away from performing, for some forty years. During these years Michael devoted himself to his family and publishing career (he successfully launched two periodicals/magazines). After meeting, MUD's friend, Chainsaw Dupont, Mike was persuaded to come back to the present time and perform on the MUD's stage, his first on-the-stage appearance (back in real time), during Chanisaw Dupont's Blues Jam. That evening he played and sang songs written by him long time ago, song's that were not even given a chance to be forgotten.
I, on the other hand, would never forget the first song he played at the MUD. I was working at the back of the shop, at the moment, when I heard a total silence, strange since there was a room full of people just behind me, so I went back to the main room to investigate. When I looked at the audience, I noticed this total preoccupation, characteristic only for the moments when we are prompt to examine something of a great importance to us, the moments when we don't want to miss even a slightest shadow of a whisper. Mike was that whisper. Quietly and calmly, almost effortlessly, he persuaded all of us, to enter the world seen through his mind. It was a fascinating journey to both future and the past at the same time.
MUD can't wait to travel with your music again, Mike!

THE finals season is usually the busiest time for us, and so it was this year, consequently we were too busy to update our blog. Hopefully now I will have more time to work on some interesting ideas, and, of course, continue our MUD story!
Summer is coming and we will intensify our entertainment program, there are hardly any people studying here, so we can be A LITTLE louder during the weekend evenings. Above is our new poster, I just finished it and we will post it around the city and campus.

MUD Story, Chapter 14 "How MUD's stage was erected, and the beginnings of the bar"

THERE was a never ending stream of suppliers that went through the MUD then. Mostly bakeries and coffee roasting companies. By that time, the spring of 2004, we narrowed our coffee possibilities down to two. One was Umbria, a company from the West Coast, and the other was our present supplier. Umbria is an award winning company with an excellent product line. We really liked their coffee, however we still preferred the one we are using right now, although, by a very narrow margin. This was a very tough choice. On the construction end, the walls were still being fixed up, all the glitches and trouble spots addressed, one-by-one.
I also hired Bob, Ghetto Joe and Cory to work on constructing the stage. It didn't take more than a week to build. Bob took this project very seriously, trying to make it as strong as possible, after all, there was going to be some jumping happening there, at some point in the future. While three of them worked on the stage, I was still painting the mural. It took me good several days to do so. I wanted to give it as much of an antique look as I could, and this takes time.
Second or third day of stage construction, when all the structure of it was already in place, and the only part missing was the top layer, Cory stood on one of the 2x4's, grabbed his harmonica and played a few notes. As soon as he finished he shouted: "I am the first person to play on MUD's stage!", and he was.

LAST Friday we were entertained by Keri Johsrud and her jazz band. This time Keri was accompanied by a different set of musicians, equally as good as her original ensemble.
The evening started with just a handful of people in the audience, towards the end of the concert however the place was almost packed full. We had our windows and outdoor cafe open. Keri is coming back to MUD in two weeks. Check it out!

MUD Story, Chapter 13 " Tiles, murals, and pastries"

After the hardwood part of MUD's floor was done, there was time to finish the tiled area. Bob, Drunk Rock and his girlfriend Sharka did that part. Bob was trying to finish it as soon as he could because three of them were going downstate for a weekend. I was supposed to join them on the trip, but I decided against it, since there was so much work left to do.
The tile floor took a while, there was a lot of tile cutting involved. Bob worked on that part for couple of days. Rounded edges presented the most problem. Initially Bob just "eye-balled" spacing the tiles, but I decided to actually use the quarter inch spacers to make the distances perfect. I was glad I did, since this made whole difference in look. I wouldn't mind roughly spaced floor if the rest of it was done this way as well, but it wasn't, so we had to be consistent. Bob wasn't too happy about it, because it slowed down the process significantly.

THE last of three pieces of my art that hang on MUD walls. The shapes in the background are not skyscrapers, these are smoke stacks, the permanent feature of the Silesian landscape, the industrial area of Poland where I was unfortunate to grow up. Actually it reminds me of three places I happen to love: my home-town (Tarnowskie Gory/Poland) for one, Rio de Janeiro two, and Saint Louis MO three, it didn't intend (except for my home-town part) to be this way originally though... (isn't the arch a bit like the "U", in MUD's upside down logo?)

MUD Story, Chapter 12 "The MUD Floor Party"

What a fun it was! Something so boring and ordinary as constructing a floor, can become such an entertainment to all involved, with a little help of a friends. First day of construction started on schedule. Bob, Carlos and Ghetto Joe worked on preparing the sub-floor, while Cory and I went to the flooring supply store to get the wood. We looked at all the samples there and I decided to get the red oak. Fortunately this was one of the most inexpensive kinds of hardwood there (accidentally one of the most attractive as well), and it was on sale too, so we got a pretty good deal. After loading the car, there was hardly any room for Cory to sit, he ended up being squeezed between the door and a few cardboard boxes. To load my small Nissan Altima with all this material, was truly an impressive task. Of course the interior suffered some damage, but by then I decided that this car was going to be a "delivery vehicle" or company "truck", as I jokingly called it. By the end of construction, almost entire building material here was brought in it.
Of course work wouldn't be going "smoothly" without proper "oiling". So I ended up getting a case of 30 GMD beers a day. It was fun, lots of laughs and jokes, lots of funny stories and beers... These guys worked equally as hard though. After the first day we laid the section of the floor right by the main entrance door.
I loved the wood we used, although it was raw, and my plans called for staining it dark, I loved the purity of color with it's pattern of darks and lights. I was very tempted to leave it as it was, again, I wanted to stay as close to original design as possible. To see this "virgin" pure, stretch of flooring next to all the construction and demolition mess was a huge contrast. It only made the floor itself look more beautiful.
My floor "crew" worked very hard indeed, almost day and night. Some of them stayed and slept at the construction site. It was during one of these nights that Cory claimed to had seen the ghost. The rest of us didn't take him seriously, but (as you will find out in a coming chapters!) there was something unnatural happening in here, every now and then...

WE are excited to let you know that Keri Johnsrud, and her Keri Johnsrud Jazz Trio, are going to perform at MUD again, on Friday April 14th and April 28th. We can't wait to hear her crystal clear voice singing all our jazz favorites.

When Keri Johnsrud sings jazz standards like Our Love is Here to Stay, Desifinado and But Beautiful, Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney-shine through. So, it's now surprise that Keri and her dynamic jazz ensemble, The Keri Johnsrud Jazz Trio, are attracting praise from the critics and a loyal following in entire Chicagoland.
Keri, a native Iowan, comes from a talented family that surrounded her with music, especially jazz. Her first public performance was at the age of seven and she's been singing and entertaining ever since.
After graduating from the University of Iowa, she headed for Chicago, where she has studied with renowned vocal coach Karyn Sarring. She performs at clubs and special events. Her most recent venues include The Zebra Lounge, The Peppercorn Cafe and area Border's Bookstores. She performed at the MUD on several occasions during the last year and already gained some faithful following here. We very excited to see her "playing in the MUD" with us :)

Michael Stein is going to perform at the MUD next Saturday, April 1st. We haven't seen him here since last June, when he performed regularly and hosted our Friday open jam.
I owe you at least a few words about him.

CHRISTINE, one of our first employees and a dear friend, just came back from her trip to Guatemala. Instead of your typical girl "going wild", she used her spring break time off, to organize help effort providing Guatemalan children with medical, personal, and dental hygiene supplies. MUD totally supports her involvement!
If you don't remember, Christine also organized a benefit concert, here at the MUD, to raise funds for the same Guatemalan children cause

CURENTLY, at the MUD, we are presenting a small exhibition of Rafael Levchin's Masks.
Rafael was born in 1946 (Dzhankoy, Crimea Peninsula, former USSR). Graduated from Moscow Literature Institute in 1963. Participant of many informal groups of artists and poets in Moscow and Kiev. Nominated for Nobel Prize in poetry, from USSR. His works are in private collections in Moscow, Kiev, Krakow, Koenigsberg, Chicago, Miami and Mexico City.

MUD Story, Chapter 11

Harold didn't last too long as an electrician. He finally got into my condo through the window and just simply left the door open to get back in. I have hardly seen any rent money from him, needless to say, he put a minimal amount work into the place and most of it had to be redone anyway. I still believed him when he said that he will help. The only useful work that Harold did, was actually temporary light and outlets that worked for us during the construction.
On the plumbing end, the April deadline, Quinn gave me to finish the job, turned out to be yet another myth. Things were going much slower, I didn't mind too much because there was a lot of other stuff that needed to be done too.
Around the same time I sold the grill hood (seen in a background) on Ebay. Some small pizzeria, from Ohio, bought it. They came to claim it about two weeks after it was sold. When I heard the guy on the phone, with his heavy accent, he got me a bit scared. Not by the way he spoke as much as by the way he was thinking. First of all, it occurred to me a day before he came, that he was driving here in a small pick up truck and a trailer all by himself. How was he going to load this thing on it? You have to remember that hood was solid, thick sheet metal, about 16 Ft. long, about 5 ft. wide, and roughly 2 ft. deep. He tried to ease up my concerns, when I talked to him next time, and told me that he had help. Later I realized that help was his 15 years old son. I didn't really felt like loading this baby on the trailer, and promised myself not to even touch the damn thing. Of course reality had proven different and I ended up spending good three hours getting the hood out of the space and, of course, loading it promptly on the trailer. Both of them hardly spoke to me, and none of the words they used was neither "thank" nor "you".

Jim Green aka Wondering Endorphins, is going to delight us with his unusual style of guitar playing plus all original material that together can easily rival the best. Show starts at 8 pm and there will be no cover charge, except unsolicited donations to support Jim's endorphins. Here are some bits and pieces about what you are about to experience:

Jim Green, a.k.a. The Wandering Endorphin, is, as they say, a horse of a different color. Green's real genius, becomes apparent on the instrumental tracks. "Firefly" is an aural retelling of a late night, drunken bicycle ride through the forest that combines Greens' two-handed techniques with Tom Culver's melodic cello lines to great melodic effect. The Wandering Endorphin is making some of the most interesting and innovative acoustic music in Chicago and anyone wishing to experience something new done with the tried-and-true would do well to investigate Destination Euphoria as well as Greens' live shows.

I think Jim Green makes love to his guitar at night, because there is no reason for someone to be that close to a piece of wood and strings and emit the amazing sounds he does out of it. Jim has an amazing talent to provide an original sound.

SINCE we show art at cafe MUD, I will present some of what hangs on MUD's walls, in our blog as well.
Right now, we are showing ceramic masks made by Rafael Levchin, who is not only a great artist by also accomplished poet, nominated to a Nobel Prize in poetry from Russia, (I am going to write a separate entry about Rafael's artwork). We are also showing my own artwork (see above), originally created in different mixed media combinations, using airbrush, watercolors, colored pencils, acrilics, pen and ink, markers and airbrush.
The piece, I am showing here, hangs on our exposed brick wall (see at it's location here). It always steered the most interest, and there were multiple inquiries about purchasing it, (actually all of our artwork is for sale. Please contact MUD for details.)
Eventually we will be showcasing different artists on much more regular basis.

TO find the right blend, MUD has tasted coffees from at least fifteen different roasting companies. The one, we ended up using, comes from a large, 100 years old company, which, relatively recently, only a several years ago, got into the gourmet coffee business. Somehow, by comparison, their's was the best bean we could find. To assure consistency and quality of our espresso, we are using one of the best brewing equipment available.

It was great, although Josh Moshier, who usually plays here on Sundays, couldn't make it, his friends covered for him, playing in duet, piano and upright bass. Their style was a little different, seemed a little more aggressive, still very, very good!

MUD, still echoing your voices...

I like this picture because, for some reason, it looks as if it was a painting, smoky and ancient... The effect comes from a different arrangement of light and being close to the stage lights that "bleached" the shot. We put a lot of attention on lighting at the MUD, all our lights are dimmed and independently controlled, which gives us almost "endless" ability to change the mood.

Glass in our windows is covered with a special coating, which prevents sun glare and dramatically reduces the heat generated by the sunlight, not to mention that, since this is a very thin layer of steel, this windows even when broken stay together and prevent a potential intruder from getting in, or a good customer from getting out (just a joke!)

Northwestern's exams are now in full swing. As we promised MUD stays open "till the last customer", which creates an ideal environment for many of our guests to study. We stay busy practically around the clock and that is one of the reasons why MUD was created. We wish all our student customers to break their proverbial "leg".

That first phase of construction, installing drywall with Paul's helped, even though there wasn't much to show for a "day's work", to give me a great sense of accomplishment for some reason. At least one spot looked somewhat done when we finished. After waiting for the building permit for such a long time I suddenly felt like there was a pair of wings attached to my shoulders. Everything seemed possible. Roughly at the same time Ben, a friend and HVAC specialist, determined that our hot water boiler was sabotaged by the previous tenant and we couldn't use it anymore. The price of new one was over two thousand dollars. This piece of news didn't make me happy, but at this point I was prepared for any kind of news.
Ben also brought his plumber friend, Quinn, who pretty much told us that entire plumbing in the place was useless and would have to be replaced with a new one. He estimated the job for at least seven to eight thousand dollars, this was another unpleasant surprise. Our costs were rising all over the place. I was brainstorming where and how to cut the corners in order to accommodate the new expenses. I decided to give Quinn the job. He promised to start right away and be done with it by the end of April. Since he was working full time at his "day job" he could only work here at night and during the weekends.

On this, Thursday, night Cafe MUD is going to be hosting another fundraiser. This time we are supporting the fund organized by Globemed (check globemed.org) which will provide Guatemalan children with fluoride, general hygiene supplies, and prescription medication. This is a wonderful idea, and it is going to be supported by a talent of Sherri Anne Nyberg, young very talented guitar player, singer and song-writer. We know we can count on your support, this is going to be a wonderful evening! Show starts at 8:00 pm and will last till 10 pm. There will be a donation of minimum $5 per person at the door

We didn't really expected this! It turned out that last night, reached the biggest crowd this place has had ever seen. There was no place to sit anymore, even though we brought in all or our "outdoor cafe" folding chairs and tables inside, there still was a standing crowd. Thanks to the open space in the middle of the cafe's main room, which proves again and again to be very useful in such situations, both for traffic inside and comfort of the standing crowd, everybody was accommodated.
Music was very impressive and I will have another entire entry just about this tomorrow, to give it a justice, I hope to get some pictures, if any of you reading this have any pics taken at the MUD, please email them to us here, or to cafe_mud@yahoo.com.
We are very happy with the turnout, and that the"SEED" group boys and girls, will be able to spread more "SEED'S" around! Mudmen :) wants to thank you all for showing your support, to those who show their support!

You all know that we, at the MUD, love our fragile environment and sound ecological development, and always give it a full support. This coming Thursday, a group of young ambitious student from NU decided to organize an exciting evening of music, poetry and such, to rise the funds for S.E.E.D (Students for Ecological & Environmental Development). There will be a minimum of $5 per person donations collected at the door for the SEED cause. So far there are five entertainers scheduled to perform that night, and they are going to be presenting: Scottish music, classical guitar music, acoustic guitar ballads and more. We will keep you posted about any exciting additions to the program. The shows starts around 8:00-8:30 pm. Be there, show your support to those who show their support!

From the end of November 2005 every week I have been posting a consecutive chapters of the story of Cafe MUD (you can see the whole story in archives under October 2004). The reason behind it is that story of MUD is pretty fascinating one, and I thought it would be interesting for you to find out how we became what we are. I think it is only fair to share this with you, since after all, this is your place, and it also makes quite an interesting tale! Just bare with me, and you'll learn a new meaning of proverbial "MUD throwing"!!! (just kidding :)
Please excuse my poor English, and remember that this is still my second language.
All of the entries will be saved in archives starting October 2004, and stored there. Only the first few paragraphs of each chapter will be posted under current date, on weekly basis. Let see if I can cope with this! If everything goes right, by our second anniversary I should be done with all of it, up to this point, where I actually decided to start writing this story, the "MUD Story".

MUD Story, Chapter 9

Unfortunate grill hood was moved from the ceiling to the middle of the room, where it sat until it was sold on Ebay in the middle of April. All during that time, it was dripping old brown grease all over the place. Harold, the electrician from hell, started to work for us early in 2004. He purchased whole bunch of materials, of which big portion is still sitting in our basement. I gave him the keys to the place and one morning realized that he was sleeping on the floor as well, using the space as his large, extremely cold and messy bedroom. Apparently Harold was homeless, which is hard to believe, since he held an electrical contractor license, and haveing one of these can be very lucrative business. This should have raised all the flags, but I always believed in giving people a chance, second, third... so I didn’t do much about it.
In the meantime I was going through another hell of a time with my condominium as well. I rented it almost two years years before to a wonderful black couple with a small child. For the first year and a half it was great, they really took care of the place and always paid the rent on time. However around April of 2003 the couple split and she became the only tenant. I never realized that she was a recovered alcoholic and drug user. When her boyfriend left her, she went straight back to her old habits of drug and alcohol abuse, not to mention, according to my neighboors, prostituting herself and changing my lovely condo into the crack house and unofficial brothel. Needless to say she also stopped paying her rent altogether.

We are very excited about upcoming concert of our great friend Austin (Austin and Pete) this time as AUSTIN AND FRIENDS (Pete, temporarily, won't be able to perform with Austin for next few month). If you don't know him, Austin is a very talented young musician, his temporary style and perfect delivery never fails to draw a crowd of fans, including us! We will keep you posted. On Sundays we are going to have a regular jazz piano performances, in the afternoons from 2 pm. till 5 pm. Next one is going to feature Joshua Moshier, a young musician and Northwestern student, who is frequent performer at the Mud, either solo or with his band. He plays improvisational jazz based on many known jazz standards. He always gives a quite remarkable performance and we highly recommend it!

We are very happy to be opened again. It is so nice to see the same faces around. There is a lot of fun coming our way. We have planned several concerts this month, including Austin and Pete, unfortunately without Pete this time, however, Austin promised to bring his friends with. There are a few new items on our menu and everything seems fresh and new, just like this year itself! I acquired some new music during my trip to Europe and there will be some more coming soon. It feels good to be back!!!!

Greetings from Europe!

First of all, sorry for not being able to complete the next chapter of the MUD Story, but I am traveling in Europe for a brief moment now. I promise to write one as soon as I am back at the MUD.
Right now, I am sitting at some cafe in Nurenberg in the midst of the Bavarian jungle, bathing in the heat of the fluorescent lights, surrounded by exotic plastics, notices, orders and advertisements everywhere, listening to clicks and someone's TV blasting in the background, still having to pay 1 euro for each fifteen minutes or so of this torture, what a far cry from our friendly, soft, inviting, free intern"e"tional, and muddy MUD's atmosphere!!! I really miss MUD, and I realize even more now, how much I love it...
I will see you soon, right there, at the MUD after, hopefully, peaceful and happy holidays.

Bossa's back at the MUD!!!

Next Friday Dec.9 th. at 9 pm we are very excited to present our second in history session of Bossanova music, by very talented duo of Renaldo and Marty. Renaldo is a guitar player from Venezuela and for years he played in Brazil with original Brazilian Bossanova band. Marty is an American musician who loves Brazilian music and mastered Portuguese. This is rare treat for us, and hopefully Bossa is here to stay with us! Those who come to visit us often know that we love Brazilian music here and play it on daily basis. Joshua Moshier Jazz Band is back at the MUD!!!

We have a pleasure to have Josh Moshier's Jazz Band back at MUD. He is a Northwestern University student and really talented jazz pianist. Josh is going to entertain us on regular basis every Sunday afternoon from 2 pm till 6 pm and on Tuesday's from 8 pm till 10 pm. Most of the times he is accompanied by the upright bass, however sometimes, like tonight, he brings other musicians to join him on stage.

December 2 nd .and 4 th, at 8 pm. we are going to present Dawn Xiana Moon. An incredible, young Chinese-American performer, composer, dancer, and a model from Michigan.
Her music captivated us from the first note we heard. She is amazing! Dawn composes her own material sings, plays piano and guitar. Her music was described as "... a very unique melodic quality... hauntingly beautiful!" and: "In this day and age of cookie cutter 'American Idol' music, where the emphases are on the next big hit, it is refreshing to find someone that brings passion and feeling back to their music." We can't wait to hear her perform!

This was truly a great party! We had so much fun at the MUD that night! Nobody wanted it to end. It lasted till early morning. We had a lot of true friends here. Although it was crowded, the atmosphere here was fantastic. Everybody was so friendly and loving! I personally, have never experienced such a good vibrations.
We jammed a bit and had a few solo performances as well. It was just a wonderful evening. I wish all of you were here. Well, maybe next year. The pictures above were taken by Monika, pretty late, since she was busy most of the time helping to organize and keep things going smoothly. By that time most of the people were gone and only the hard core MUD partiers were still here.
Please excuse our state, everybody was after a "few-too-many" at that moment, including yours truly... but hey, that's what parties are for!

This performance was simply breathtaking! After it was over, we were all sitting here, at the MUD, with our jaws dropped.... speechless. This was an amazing journey, so dramatic, so exhaustingly brutal, and yet so soft and gentle, so very personal. Theatre just doesn't get any better than this. Lately we have been experimenting with staying open later than usual. Because of NU mid-terms we decided to stay open till the last customer leaves, which for example means that last night we closed at almost three o'clock in the morning. We were surprise how many "insomniacs" beside us there are! Some of our clients really like the idea.

She is not only smart and beautiful young woman, but also a student of NU studying Italian and European studies, as well as a talented athlete and a member of this university's soccer representation, so she just "kicks ass". Christine is still in training, but it already feels like she belongs here more than anybody else before her! Come over and ask her to make you a best "Mud Snickers Latte" in the world! Welcome Cheikh!

We are very excited to announce that a new member of a crew just came aboard. His name is Cheikh (pronounce Shack). Cheikh is Paris born young man who grew up in Senegal and speaks six languages. He is also a fantastic musician, playing keyboard, bass guitar, guitar and drums as well as singing (with his incredible deep voice) in Wolof, French and English.. He is a very devoted new member and we are extremely excited to have him with us. His great and outgoing personality will surely make him a favorite of our customers!

about August at the MUD

due to some internet problems we haven't updated this page for couple of weeks. Fortunately we can do it now. August is probably our slowest month, because of the end of classes at Northwestern as well as vacation time for many of our non-student patrons. This month we have a limited amount of live music, however there are some fun events coming to MUD. On thursdays we still have live jazz band, trio of upright bass, drums and guitar. Next two Saturdays there will be a perfomance by Sandy and Adina, two witty songwriting women. We are also going to host Davis Quintet as well as Pete and Austin, both toward the end of the month, we will keep you posted.
